Thanks for your quick reply.  It appears that I had the following JAI
jars in my classpath on the live server:

jai_codec.jar
jai_core.jar
jai_imageio.jar

They look to be a bit out of date (May 2005), and were relics from a
previous user's app.  On my local machine I don't have any special
imaging libraries.  Having ascertained other webapps on the live server
didn't use them, I removed them and restarted Tomcat.  This appears to
have cured the problem!

I suppose if I included one of the recommended integration imaging
library jars within my webapp classpath, RIFE would use that in
preference to any which happened to be lying around in jre/lib/ext?
