There's no better way to make sure you understand something than to try to explain it, so I've started documenting the internals of RIFE's built-in authentication system. I am not done yet, but if someone who's familiar with that code can take a look at what I've written so far and tell me if I've gotten anything wrong, that'd be great. As I continue to write I don't want to build on an erroneous foundation. Plus, like I said, this is an exercise in making sure I understand how it works, and I might not have figured it out correctly.

The new stuff is after the "Flow of execution" header, but it makes some use of the message from Geert at the top of the page. Hopefully it's both correct and informative for people. Feedback also welcome on whether following a succession of requests is a good format to explain how the system works; it's maybe not so useful as a reference guide, but the intent is to explain to someone who isn't already familiar with the various pieces.
