If you are really concerned about sound quality then you might want to
run a few simple listening tests between Ogg and Mp3 to see if you can
hear the difference.

People generally find Ogg to be better for sound quality (note that
this is at 128kpbs):

Whether -you- can hear the difference is another question... I don't
think I can.

Are you -sure- you can't afford the space for lossless? We're not
talking terrabytes, I have over 400 albums in FLAC and they take up
about 150gb. You can get a decent 200gb drive for around $100
(canadian) and if you want an ideal backup, you just need a second one.
So the whole thing will cost you $200.

Weighed against the time and effort you may have to take in the future
to re-rip all your CDs... that doesn't seem rediculously expensive to
me.

The beauty of lossless is that you'll only have to do it once. Even if
FLAC dies out as a format, you can easily convert it to any other
lossless or lossy format.

The bottom line is that all modern lossy encoders are highly optimized
and chances are you won't be able to hear a difference between them.
Personally, if I wanted a lossy collection, I'd go with MP3 because its
so compatible and the last thing you want to be doing is transcoding
between lossy formats (since you'll be getting a double wammy on
possible sound quality loss).
