Actually, the interesting bit about this post is not that the FLACs and MP3 sound identical. That's the way it *should* be if you have chosen appropriate settings for your MP3 encoding.
What's interesting is that the FLACs and the source CD sound *different*. that should *not* happen. FLAC is lossless encoding, so the data is 100% identical between FLAC and CD. The difference, therefore, must be in the hardware being used for playback. In this case, that means your Squeezebox/Network and your CD player (which are both finding their way into the same amp and speakers). This would lead us to conclude that the digital-to-audio conversion (the DAC) is substantially better either on the Squeezebox or the CD player. Have you tried using digital outputs from your Squeezebox (that's what I do). Anyway, the trouble with any "I can tell the difference" tale is that you have an inevitable placebo effect. Proper double-blind tests, like ABX, are very difficult to arrange when you actually have to switch from one bit of equipment to another. At very least, you will need a partner to help.
