hey mark, no worries. thanks for your input. anyway, i just analysed a load of mp3s using the mp3gain gui. most of the files have a volume well above 89dB which I expected. however, for most files above about 93dB the "clipping" column has a "Y" in it. I don't really understand the technicalities of clipping but it seems to me that if you lower the volume of a track then there is no way you get clipping...?
