I have ripped about 1000 cds out of my collection. They are not in
pristine condition.

I keep a lens cloth nearby (same as used to clean your glasses) and
give them a wipe if they look very dirty. Stubborn spots I just rinse
and rub with tap water and dry the disk carefully.

If it still doesn't rip I switch from secure to burst mode which thus
far has been very forgiving.

To keep my sanity I rip whilst reading the online papers and so do
about 1 hour a day (10-20 disks). I takes a while to get through the
collection but you don't sacrifice your holidays.

I guess that if you are really keen on getting lots done quickly you
could load up your PC with CD drives and perhaps do the compression
overnight.

I do find that the cd drives "wear out" I am on to my third one now.
They just seem to get more syncing errors at the end.
