One last idea for the time being...Is your http port 9000? If you have changed that you must specify the --http-port option on the command line. Otherwise the wrong http://-urls for the images would be generated. That would explain the long timeout.
The best way would be to get one of the cover urls out of the xml file and try it directly in your browser.
