Have you read the (immensely thick) CD spec? Being the holder of the
Flac copyright, I would think so. So are you not aware of the CRC's,
data redundancy and everything else that was built into this format
before the CD qualities, drives, and lasers were of the quality they
are today? The CD spec is immensely over-protective of its data (so
long as you don't scratch the top, which the data is actually closer
to), to a degree that is incredibly unnecessary any longer with today's
capabilities, but which still exists because of the materials and
equipment at the time the spec was created. The reasons for errors
have much more to do with all the differing CD types and drives all
trying to out x10 themselves in speed than it does with the actual
spec. If ripped at 1x, a good condition CD on pretty much any drive
made today should be ripped perfectly with no problems. All one need
do is rip on several different machiens/drives and do a "grep" type
compare and see if any audibly significant differences are created. If
you can point to such a study, I would truly like to see it.

[164kb MP3 encoded library (wish FLAC had been around when I did most of
my ripping oh so long ago) -> PC -> 100 Mb network -> SB3 -> Denon 3805
(used mainly as a pre-amp / DSP) -> Speakercraft BB1265 running
whole-house audio, rack of assorted amps, mostly older Carvers or
Sunfires -> bi-amp'd Paradigm Reference Studio 100 V.3's, CC-570,
ADP-470's, and my own make of electrostatics (hence the rack of
Amps).]
