Yep, found that not long after posting my message (I keep forgetting to crawl through the wiki). I've started thinking about how to deal with the classical part of my collection, and ran across this thread from a while back:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17877&highlight=archiving+classics ...and share those participants' frustration that there is not an elegant way to deal with managing such a collection (really the multilayered problems that come from moving complex content organized one way -- on CD -- to another -- a music library and its taxonomy). The problem's really the same for popular music, but more hidden, since most people aren't like, say, Nick Hornby and think about this music from several different angles. Seems to me one big problem is that tagging systems are very CD-package-dependent, and aren't as good dealing with the entities (and interrelationships between the entities) of pieces of music, whether they're songs, symphonies, etc. All I know is that I need to think about this some more :).
