You're right....the soundcard is not part of the process. That
reference was in the excerpt and it may refer to some other part of the
question that was being addressed in the document I quoted. The main
point is that level attenuation in the digital domain which is how
replaygain works, can reduce the resolution and audio quality. It notes
as an example that a 10dB gain reduction will lose 1.5 bits of
resolution on playback. I frequently saw 10-12 dB. Of course, you may
not notice this at all and you may not see that amount of reduction on
your particular CD's, so it may only be concern if you do not wish to
sacrifice resolution for any reason. Since replaygain does not change
the audio information in your ripped files, you can add it when you rip
and just disable the function in SS if you don't want to use it.
