It can't play it through the digital outputs because that too requires some basic knowledge of the ac3 format, essentially, the data needs splitting into frames and padding to bring the total data rate up to a standard pcm rate. I think there's a bug somewhere requesting this.
You can however do the work yourself by producing a WAV file that it already suitably padded, which slimserver will quite happily play, and your receiver should then decode. There may well be tools to do this. If not, it's probably not too hard to create a perl script to do it instead.
