I have them in shelves.  As far as I'm concerned, they don't really
take up that much space and I sometimes pull them out to read the liner
notes.

For the car I'd never consider playing an original CD in that
environment.  Car CD players and the handling that CDs get in a vehicle
trashes them quickly.  Why do that when you can easily dupe a CD for
pennies?  When I rip a CD in EAC I always generate a non-compliant CUE
sheet, then change the file references to .flac instead of .wav.  I use
the program Burrrn to burn CDs using these CUE sheets directly from the
Flac files.
