I think that ripping programs generally have improved substantially since EAC first came out. Whilst there's no doubt that many consider EAC the "gold standard", there are other options which are easier to use and set up and which produce good quality rips.
DBPowerAMP and Audiograbber are my choices. Have you also looked at the Guide to Ripping, which lists several options that people here use?
