Hello all. I am trying to find my way through the various ID3 and
Vorbis comments and I am a bit dazed and confused, so some help from
you will be appreciated.

My digital collection of about 3,000 albums is almost evenly split in
high bitrate MP3 and FLAC, with a relatively small number of albums in
OGG. Until now, I was under the impression that they were fairly
well-tagged (I've been using iTunes for MP3 files and Tag & Rename or
Foobar for FLAC). Now, after using SB3 and SS for a couple of months, I
realize that tagging is a bit more complicated than I thought,
especially when it comes to the way that SlimServer responds to various
types of tags (ID3, Vorbis comments etc).

I basically want to go through my tagging and ensure that the tags I
use are correctly 'understood' and used by SlimServer - and taht before
I undertake the task of ripping the rest of my CD collection). I
checked various tagging forums (including this one) and also the Slim
wiki for the table of tags that SlimServer uses, but still I am left
with some queries and I hope some of you could help. Summarizing:

- What's the different between <ALBUMARTIST> and <ALBUM ARTIST>, if
any? To which field in ID3 do they correspond?

- Does SlimServer understand/make use of <ALBUMARTIST> or <ALBUM
ARTIST>? Or, is it simply the <ARTIST> tag that is taken into account?
I see no instance of <ALBUMARTIST> or <ALBUM ARTIST> in the SS wiki,
but this may be outdated (I am using 6.5.4. build).

- I saw that <ARTISTSORT> is interpreted by SS. Does it prevail in
sorting?

I will give a realistic example (as occurred in my database) and hope
there'll be some answer. My collection is mostly jazz (or, at least
this is the most intriguing part to tag, sort etc.). Taking Thelonious
Monk as an example, we have the following album situations:

- albums by Thelonious Monk solo
- albums by Thelonious Monk Trio
- albums by Thelonious Monk Quartet
- albums by Thelonious Monk and... (John Coltrane, Gerry Mulligan etc),
where Monk is the prevailing artist.
,and so it goes.

I'd like to have them all gathered under Thelonious Monk name in artist
view, sorted as (Monk, Thelonious) (that is under "M"), but still be
able to see the information of the specific ensemble when in Album
View. Therefore, I have <ARTISTSORT> set to Monk, Thelonious for all
these situations. Still, if the <ALBUM ARTIST> is set to anything
different (say to "Thelonious Monk Quartet"), then on the Artists
screen of SS I get both Thelonious Monk & Thelonious Monk Quartet, and
so the albums are split.

Does anyone have an insight of how such situations are met?

Thanks in advance,

Yiannis
