I always thought that ALBUMARTIST and BAND are the same as far as
slimserver is concerned.
However I recently discovered the following:
I use the following format to display track information in the web
interface and the now playing screen on the SBs:

TRACKNUM. TITLE (DURATION) by ARTIST from ALBUM (YEAR) by BAND
--------------------
Note the "by BAND" at the end of the format string.
This part only gets displayed when the track has an album artist.
This works well with mp3s where the album artist is the TPE2 frame.
With flac however the album artist is only displayed if you use BAND
but not if you use ALBUMARTIST.
I have now started to use BAND instead of ALBUMARTIST.
