i hope i am not starting an endless debate here, but i am going to post anyways.
up till now, i have been using garf's gtune3b2 vorbis encoder @q6, with -to my ears- outstanding results. however, i realize it is ancient. so i spent some time @hydrogenaudio researching ayoumi's newest aotuvb5 encoder. apparently, it is hydrogenaudio's recommended reference vorbis encoder. i was hoping the new version had improved over the last one i tried (b2, i think) and it seems it has. BUT - there still is a distinct difference between the two @ q6 (see attachment). i ABX-ed various tracks encoded with default encoder settings and found: gtune3b2 -> more open, airy, light and better staging. also: more precision in impulse attacks (vorbis' inherent weakness). but also a tendency to make the music louder (dynamic loss?), with some slight loss of definition in passages wich can cause music to sound "muddy". aotuvb5 -> opposite. more closed, somehow "darker", dampened. slightly less accurate attacks. however, the music seemed to be more precise, and instruments would be better defined. "restrained" is the word that best suits this encoder. overall, my personal preferences still tend to gtune3b2, because i like that kind of sound. but i am deeply interested in your opinions and experiences! am i imagining these differences? or do you guys hear them too? +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Filename: gtune3b2 vs aotuvb5.txt | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3772| +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ -- dcote ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dcote's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9701 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40694 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping
