Thanks!!! I figured it was 'caused I'd just switched to a new firewall (ZoneAlarem) the night before and that it had finally 'tuned out' EAC's access requests to freedb. I've been sung EAC to rip 100s of CDs and then ... nothing.
Meb's suggested alternative for freedb URL worked fine.
