It's a long time since I used DAT, and things may have changed since
then, but back when I was interested in the subject, there was a
problem trying to read audio DAT tapes in computer drives. Even though
they use the same physical tapes, the format of what's recorded onto
audio DAT is different to data DDS. Computer DDS drive firmware cannot
read audio DAT format. (The only DDS drive that could read audio DAT
back in those days was an SGI model). But as I say, my info is years
old - things might have changed since then.

Not necessarily. In fact, IIRC it's only consumer-level DAT recorders
that limit you to recording at 48kHz. All semi-pro and pro models
allowed you to select the sample rate. My DAT tapes (recorded on a
Tascam DA30mkII) were always done at 44.1kHz, precisely so they could
be transferred to CD without resampling.
