I guess I put the wrong title on the thread. Your replies are focused on the writing of tags to these files, but it's actually _reading_ the files into mp3tag which takes such an incredibly long time.
I just did some more test, and reading these files into mp3tag is at least an order of magnitude slower than the same number of files from any other directory.
