I have also been trying to settle on a solution for this same problem. It seems that if you actually leave COMPILATION as null, you get a different behaviour again! The track will be listed under the ALBUMARTIST if set. You can still search under ARTIST & find this ARTIST and press play, but oddly scrolling right shows no tracks listed....
