Very few audio CDs have any copy protection and when they do they call
it out prominently on the disc label/packaging as if it were a
"feature".

I would expect high error rates to be the main cause of slow disc
ripping.  There are many causes for high error rates that can be disc
related or CDROM drive related.  Before ripping I always wash my CDs
with liquid dish detergent and plenty of water, then dry with a soft
cloth.  You'd be surprised what a difference a clean disc can make.
