Hi there -- I still use MINIDISC a lot (it's the only rugged and I mean rugged device) that I can use for reporting / recording out in the field. Also good for recording demo music at gigs etc.
To transfer music TO Minidisc ( I use it as a player as well and to burn to MD there is a Sony application called Simple Burner which rips directly to MD from a CD -- which is why I still need the ISO application). The main disadvantage of the Minidisc is that it uses a closed propretary format ATRAC (can use mp3 but you have to convert and it's a hassle) or WAV (PCM uncompressed). I'm not a fan of solid state recorders as the tiny cards can get lost and are not easily physically archived and I am often away from a computer. Minidisc might have been essentially abandoned by "the Ipod generation" but are still used a lot in professional journalism and broadcasting. Taking a few MD's (7 hrs per 1GB disc @ 320 kbs is fine) for music listening - saves me having to carry two different music devices.
