Here's a description of me messing with the ALBUMARTIST tag and the
COMPILATION tag in squeezecenter.
IMPORTANT: I DID THIS WITH FLAC FILES EXCLUSIVELY! I HAVE NO IDEA HOW
MP3S WOULD BEHAVE...
I used Mp3Tag and Picard tagger for tagging.
First, I checked the "group various" option in the SC->Music Library
settings
then I created two more menus using CustomBrowse 2.4 and put them in
the main menu:
-All Artists-
(of type Artists / roles to include: artist, track artist, album artist
/ various option off)
-Album Artists-
(of type Artists / roles to include: album artist / various option
off)
Every album got a consistent ALBUMARTIST tag using Mp3tag.
The following variations mainly influence how the albums and artists
are displayed in the standard 'Artists' menu:
_A)_Compilation_(different_track_artists)_with_existing_ALBUMARTIST_but_without_COMPILATION_tag_(<blank>)_
-Artists menu:-
-no 'sub-artists' here
-compilation does appear under its ALBUMARTIST tag
-compilation does not appear in "Various Artists"
-Album Artists menu:-
-all albums appear under their ALBUMARTIST tag
-All Artists:-
-all artists (normal artists, album artists and 'sub-artists' of
compilations) are displayed
The result looked ok, there was, however, a cosmetic flaw:
Squeezecenter sometimes uses the ALBUMARTIST tag where it says Artist.
I have this compilation for example:
David Holmes - Come Get It I Got It
if I play song #5 the squeezebox' Now Playing screen displays:
5. Tom Cat (Muddy Waters)
which is correct. If I now press the right arrow on my remote the info
screen says "Artist: David Holmes" where I would prefer it to say
"Muddy Waters". The "Standard song info" menu, however, knows the
difference and displays:
Album Artist: David Holmes
Track Artist: Muddy Waters
Next I played with the compilation tag:
_B)_Compilation_(different_track_artists)_with_COMPILATION_tag_=_1_and_existing_ALBUMARTIST_
-Artists menu:-
-no 'sub-artists' here
-compilation does not appear under its ALBUMARTIST here
-compilation appears in submenu "Various Artists" sorted by its album
name
-Album Artist menu and All Artists menus: see A)-
_C)_Compilation_(different_track_artists)_with_COMPILATION_tag_=_0_and_existing_ALBUMARTIST_
-Artists menu:-
-all 'sub-artists' of the compilation now appear here
-compilation does not appear in submenu "Various Artists"
-compilation appears under its ALBUMARTIST name
-Album Artist menu and All Artists menus: see A)-
_D)_Compilation_(different_track_artists)_with_mixed_COMPILATION_tags_[0,1]_and_existing_ALBUMARTIST_
-all menus the same as in C) !!!-
_E)_Compilation_(different_track_artists)_with_existing_ALBUMARTIST_and_mixed_COMPILATION_tags_[1,<blank>]_OR_[0,<blank>]_-where_only_one_COMPILATION_tag_is_set_(the_rest_is_<blank>)-_
-Artists menu:-
-compilation appears under its ALBUMARTIST name
-ARTIST where COMPILATION tag is 0 OR 1 also appears; those without
COMPILATION tag are not displayed
-compilation does not appear in submenu "Various Artists"
-Album Artist menu and All Artists menus: see A)-
_Further_mixing_of_the_COMPILATION_tags_gives_confusing_results._ I
have a compilation for test purposes containing 4 songs of 4 different
artists. The ALBUMARTIST is the same for all tracks.
e.g. the COMPILATION tag pattern
Code:
--------------------
1
<blank>
<blank>
0
--------------------
gives the same menus as E), whereas
Code:
--------------------
0
<blank>
<blank>
1
--------------------
has the same results as B)
Methods B)-D) improve on the cosmetic flaw of method A) in such a way
that the right arrow information now displays two artists, e.g.
Artist: Aphex Twin
Artist: Seefeel
The "Standard song info" screen still knows the difference between
Album Artist and Artist, (both in squeezecenter and squeezebox) e.g.
Album Artist: Aphex Twin
Artist: Seefeel
Have a look at the attached screenshot!
-Right now, I recommend not to mix COMPILATION tags and leave it blank
for single artist albums or set it to 1 for compilations. Furthermore I
don't use the standard 'Artists' menu anymore and rather browse by
'Album Artists' and 'All Artists'. The Picard tagger does its tagging
very well for this method.-
Finally I want to say many thanks to Erland for his wonderful
CustomBrowse plugin!

Once again, these tests have been done on FLAC files only. MP3s could
behave differently.
