Phil, i think this venue is appropriate. good idea to move the discussion.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53718 i just want to say that i base what i say off of my experiences and observations, if i am wrong or making an erroneous assumption, which is very possible, then my bad. but honestly, i think i am right on what i am saying here, and i would like you to show me how i am wrong. They don't mention album artist, > band or TPE2 at all. thats EXACTLY what i said. but they [freedb] do mention track artists for comps. i use EAC and mp3, and it does it just as they describe. i made a screenshot of what EAC did when i ripped one song from a comp just now, and then played it with winamp, to show how winamp autotags it. see the attachment. notice how EAC has left TPE2 blank, but put the artist info in TPE1. notice how winamp puts "Various Artists" into TPE2 when i autotag. (and it uses gracenote, aka CDDB afaict) i use winamp to do this ALL THE TIME. again, see the screenshot. if somehow winamp is doing this without using gracenote on hundreds of albums for me, and doing it well i might add, i'd love to know how. Philip Meyer;350168 Wrote: > What (6) means is that there is no compilation tag submission, and that > for each song the track artist should appear in the song title, and the > artist name set to "Various". That is horrid. unless somehow i am missing something huge and am just being an idiot, (has happened before), you are wrong. i mean, what else can i say? what do you thik the track artist is? TPE1. what do you think the cd artist is? TPE2. not by spec, but by defacto standard. what you are describing is an incorrect reading of what it is saying. what i said is how it works in practice. again, refer to the screenshot. when i use EAC to rip, (do you use EAC and rip to mp3?), it does EXACTLY what it says it does. it puts the track artist in as the artist in TPE1. it leaves TPE2 blank. winamp, via i can only assume gracenote, then fills in TPE2, as does WMP, itunes, and many other apps. of course, they would do so from the start if you ripped with them, (or so i would assume). they definitely do it when auto-tagging, so i don't know why they wouldn't when ripping.
