There have been a few discussions on how to get SqueezeCenter to group multi disc sets into one album from FLAC tags but none of them seemed to cover the ground I needed covered yesterday. It has been a painful process due to a woeful lack of documentation but I now believe I have it working in all scenarios. I am posting this here in the hope it will help those still struggling. Some of the explanation may appear simplistic but there are noobs out there (including me) who could benefit from finding a fuller text than seems to be currently available on the internet.
I'm using SqueezeCenter 7.2.1 under RedHat Linux. For any other version and OS, YMMV. The first step is to tell SqueezeCenter to treat multi-disc sets as a single album. Do this by opening SqueezeCenter in the browser, clicking 'Settings' and on the 'Music Library' tab, change the value of 'Group Disc' to 'Treat multi-disc sets as a single album'. Click 'Apply' to save the settings. The next step is to get your FLAC tags right. I thought I had cracked this when I did my first multi-disc album by setting the DISCNUMBER tag to the number of each disk. It worked for that album but not for the second one. The first was a Star Wars double. The second was the Casino soundtrack which SqueezeCenter was convinced was 2 albums, although it did show Disc 1/1 on the first and Disc 2/2 on the second because I had used the DISCNUMBER tag. The tags you appear to need are: ALBUM: Set this to the name of the album which must be the same for every disc in the set. It should not include, for example, "Disc 1 of 2" as part of the name. SqueezeCenter uses the ALBUM tag to help it decide if it is a multiple so they must match. An ALBUM tag on the first disc of 'Star Wars (Disc 1 of 2)' and on the second disc of 'Star Wars (Disc 2 of 2)' do not match so will be treated as 2 separate albums regardless of any other tags used. DISCNUMBER: Set this to the number of the disc, eg, "1", "2", etc. COMPILATION: Here's the one I struggled with yesterday as I didn't even know I should use the tag; I thought SqueezeCenter sorted out compilations by different artists on each track. It certainly shows Compilation: Yes against albums that have differing artists. If your multi-disc set has the same artist for each track, you don't need the COMPILATION tag. I have not tested including it with a value of "0" meaning no but next time I do one I'll try it. If your multi-disc set does have different artists, you must include the COMPILATION tag with a value of "1", meaning yes. If you don't include it, SqueezeCenter won’t work out that the same album name and different disc numbers is a set. I have no idea of the logic behind this. It feels like a bug. I'm tagging manually using the vendor shipped flac in a script. Hopefully, you can set these in whatever flavour of tagger you use.
