IMHO, MusicBrainz is seriously broken.
Here's how I've finally decided to tag my classical music:
TRACKNUMBER=01
ARTIST=Wiener Philharmoniker;Carlos Kleiber
GENRE=Classical;Symphonic
DATE=1975
WORK=Symphony No.5 in C minor
OPUS=Op.67
COMPOSER_SHORT=Beethoven
COMPOSER=Ludwig van Beethoven
COMPOSERSORT=Beethoven, Ludwig van
TITLE=i. Allegro con brio
ALBUM=Beethoven: Symphony No.5 in C minor, Op.67
* TRACKNUMBER with leading zero
* multiple artists in the artist tag, separated by ";"
* multiple genres in the genre tag, separated by ";"
* DATE is year of performance
* custom tags WORK, OPUS, & COMPOSER_SHORT to store
work name, opus number, and shortened composer name
* Full composer name in COMPOSER
* composer sort order in COMPOSERSORT
* title of the movement in TITLE
* ALBUM constructed from the other tags: COMPOSER_SHORT: WORK, OPUS
On my Transporter, this displays (all on one line) as:
i. Allegro con brio from
Beethoven: Symphony No.5 in C minor, Op.67 by
Wiener Philharmoniker & Carlos Kleiber
On other plays, e.g. iPod when converted to mp3, it still looks
relatively sane, i.e. I can still see the movement name, the work, the
composer, and the artists.
Whichever way you do it, it's a long and painstaking process to get
everything right, esp. if you have a lot of CDs.
