Speed is a reason not to use -8. -8 compression takes much much longer than the default which if I remember correctly is -5. Sure your files are smaller but not by much. Less than a 1% space savings. Course the last time I ran a comparison between the 2 settings was several versions ago. Maybe they have changed it.
