I don't really see an issue with slower encoding speed (unless you have an ancient computer doing the encoding). FLAC is designed to decode all compression settings in the same amount of processor time. In practice, decoding -8 *does* use slightly more CPU than the default, but not enough to be significant. You encode once and decode many, many times. Using the maximum compression is sensible for most people.
