>Actually it's possible to add multiple GENRE tags to mp3's as well. In >fact MP3Tag will do this for you - to tag as Rock and Country, enter >Rock\\Country as the tag. This is true, although it's worth pointing out exactly what this means, as it is non-standard for mp3 id3 tags, and can get messed up by other applications.
FLAC and other decent tagging formats support multiple tags, and this is the preferred way of storing multiple genres. Background Information: ----------------------------------- The "\\" is nothing special to mp3 files - it's an internal shorthand within the Mp3Tag application for creating several GENRE tags via the "tag panel" which applies to any file/tag format. Entering Genre=Rock\\Country is equivalent to entering two tags via Extended Tags... GENRE=Rock and GENRE=Country. The mp3 id3v2.3 TCON frame is where the GENRE tag is stored. A frame has a length, and the content of the tag is terminated with a NULL character. Some applications put several genre strings in the GENRE tag, by increasing the length of the frame and using the NULL character as a delimiter between each one. The Result: ----------------- Some applications only read the first genre (up to the first NULL character), thus ignoring the length and therefore extra genres. If they write tags back to the files, they will generally lose the extra frame information. I've lost extra artist and genre information when using other applications, such as iTunes, MusicIP and MediaMonkey. I still tag in this way, as I don't like using a separator character like ";" - MusicIP and iTunes just display that as a single item, so you can end up with "Rock;Country" as a genre, and "Country;Rock" as another genre, etc. Using two GENREs with a NULL delimiter means that these apps will read the first genre (eg. the primary genre), and ignore the rest. As long as you remember not to save tags back to the files from those apps (eg. don't archive analysis in MusicIP), it works very nicely. _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping
