This isn't exactly perfect, but you're right - the file won't be
degraded further which would happen if you converted to MP3.  MP3 uses
different compression models which discards different data than AAC, so
converting to MP3 will make it slightly worse.

At least converting to FLAC -won't- make it worse, but it won't make it
better either.

The best is to start off lossless right at the beginning and make other
lossless and lossy copies off the master lossless library, but it sounds
like it's too late for that.
