AAC is a development from the original MP3 codec. It is encapsulated in a set of standards: ISO/IEC 13818-7:2003
It was developed by Fraunhofer IIS, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Dolby, Sony Corporation and Nokia. Apple Lossless is proprietary.
