Just to add a bit more to this: I removed the ARTISTSORT tags from Randy Newman's Faust (the album featuring Elton John) and rescanned. Now Elt is back where he belongs in the J section. Randy Newman still under N since (luckily) I have other Newman albums.
Still can't work out how to get the Various Artists back to their proper place though. They are currently appearing in the M section. I assume because one track features, say, Freddie MacGoo - and I've got an album by him so have got an album somewhere tagged as ARTISTSORT=MacGoo, Freddie. My VA albums don't have any ARTISTSORT tags though...
