>In general (and this is for FLAC so I can't guarantee it works the same >for mp3) I get the best VA results setting ARTIST per track, leaving >ALBUMARTIST undefined and setting COMPILATION=1. The last step >shouldn't be needed for SC but I've found other apps which like it. You >shouldn't be using the value "Various Artists" anywhere. > That's right - just set ARTIST tags. No need for Album Artist or Compilation tags, if you only care about your music appearing correctly in SqueezeCenter.
If you do set an Album Artist tag, you will also need to set COMPILATION=1, because the presence of an Album Artist by default means that the album is not a compilation. I don't think that SqueezeCenter has been updated to read a "ALBUM ARTIST" tag - only "ALBUMARTIST". >For ID3 those tags would map to TP1 (artist), TP2 (band/album artist - >make sure this is set right in SC config) and TCMP (compilation). The id3 frame names are TPE1 (for ARTIST) and TPE2 (for BAND). iTunes invented TCMP (for COMPILATION) - it's not a standard frame, and so some apps will have trouble reading it. You can configure SqueezeCenter to interpret TPE2 as ALBUMARTIST instead of BAND. SqueezeCenter does read TCMP too. However, SC also understands TXXX frames (custom tags), and looks for custom tags ALBUMARTIST and COMPILATION, which I think is the best way to go (if you need to set these tags at all - most of the time you don't need either), as this ties in nicely with how FLAC and VORBIS tags work.
