Check some of the files used in your examples to see if some of them have ARTISTSORT tags, and if so, what is in them. (This assumes that they are FLAC or Ogg -- if they're MP3 then the tag is called something else.) Typical use would be to have, for example, ARTIST=Tom Petty and ARTISTSORT=Petty, Tom. But if the Michael Jackson tracks have no ARTISTSORT tag, or even ARTISTSORT=Michael Jackson, that would explain what you are seeing.
