Ozz,

Are you using the Reference version of dBpoweramp? If so make sure you
sign up for the beta and download the latest version (13.3) along with
the betas of the codecs and DSPs that you use. The developer (Spoon) is
quite responsive and there are some good reasons to use the latest beta
for ripping as many CDs as you are. See the dBpoweramp forums for
details.

I had a similar experience as you with the condition of CDs, mine were
generally good to excellent but my wife's - not so much. I found that it
was best to clean discs with isopropyl alcohol (make sure you have one
of the higher level alcohol content mixes as it cleans better and
wicks/evaporates quicker), regardless of visual appearance, then try a
rip. I was surprised how many discs ripped accurately when I thought
they were going to take multiple repairing passes, based on visual
appearance. I purchased an Aleratec disc repair device and it works ok
but is very time consuming and frustrating on discs that need some
serious "repairing".

There are services that you can use to convert your CDs into files
however the cost is generally per disc and would likely cost you over
four figures to do the quantity of discs you have. They use expensive
and effective disc repair gear that is out of reach for most consumers.

You may be surprised with how many providers of hi-res downloadable
music that are available. The main issue is the breadth of their
offerings and pricing.

I'm in KC and we don't get that FiOS love but my DSL gets me by with 6
Mb down and 768 Kb up.

Enjoy the music,
Kiwi

PS check out Napster, they have a $5 per month streaming service that
has ~7 million tracks. The quality is 128 Kbps WMA but most people have
become dumbed down to music quality since the advent of portable digital
audio players and the service works great for parties and teenagers.
