Like you said - there's no right or wrong answer. This is what I do:
I use ARTIST tags for actual artists that I would like to appear in the Browse Artist list, and BAND for aliases for the artist, or additional artists eg. supporting bands. I use "ALBUM ARTIST" only when there are guest appearances. Eg. I have albums by an artist called "A Silver Mt. Zion", but they have produced albums under slightly different names, such as "Thee Silver Mountain Reveries" and "Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra La La Band". So, I set the artist name for every one of their albums to "A Silver Mt. Zion", but set the band name as it appears on each album. Another example. I have Page & Plant - Unplugged. I tag this with ARTIST=Jimmy Page, ARTIST=Robert Plant, BAND=Page & Plant. Then there are settings (Settings > My Music), that control what appears within SqueezeCenter lists: Ticking the Band/Orchestra checkbox would also include band names in the Browse Artists list. Sometimes I have it ticked, so I see Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and "Page & Plant" in the Browse Artists list. However, I quite like it such that Browse Artists only shows artists, and for Browse Albums to show the Band name. (Bands are also searchable artist names). There's a radio button for denoting who an album is by when browsing albums. The options are: "List Albums by all artists for that album": displays the artist(s) for an album. Eg. "Unplugged by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant", or "Pretty Little Lightning Paw by A Silver Mt. Zion". "List Albums by band": displays the band name if there is one (otherwise the artist name). Eg. "Unplugged by Page & Plant", or "Pretty Little Lightning Paw by Thee Silver Mountain Reveries". For albums that have an "Album Artist", this album artist is always displayed instead of artists or bands for the album. The only thing I haven't been too constent about, are artists such as Buddy Holly & the Crickets. I can't decide if I like to enter ARTIST=Buddy Holly, and the BAND=Buddy Holly & the Crickets or the BAND=The Crickets. "Buddy Holly & the Crickets" is nice for denoting as the band on an album (Browse Albums), but if I do tick Band/Orchestra so they appear in Browse Artists list, I would see both "Buddy Holly" and "Buddy Holly & the Crickets". Another example of this would potentially be "Neil Young and Crazy Horse". I could have entered this as ARTIST=Neil Young, and BAND=Neil Young and Crazy Horse, but Crazy Horse went on to do some solo albums, so in this case I'd enter ARTIST=Neil Young, ARTIST=Crazy Horse. But I wouldn't enter ARTIST=Buddy Holly, ARTIST=The Crickets.
