Just a couple of reasons: 1. Tagging. If you edit or add tags to the base (lossless) file immediately after ripping, then the mirroring process will duplicate those edits when it creates the MP3 file. Also, if at a later date you update the tags, you only need to update them in the base file and the mirroring process (depending on the software) can automatically mirror those tag edits. No need to edit tags in both libraries. The lossy library just takes care of itself. 2. Speed. Lossy encoding, such as using Lame to encode to MP3 is much slower than lossless encoding with something like Flac.
