I've tried two external a/d converters with mixed results: Project phono box II usb - digital sound was decent but there was too much clipping, and no attenuator; project "support" was laughable - I sought advice on attenuating the signal prior to the a/d... it took several days of explaining before they understood that turning down the input on audacity wouldn't make any difference!; after a week project finally acknowledged that the 40dB amplification was too high for my cartridge but failed to offer any advice on attenuation... yawn.
So I've tried a NAD PP3. The phono stage sounds good, and it doesn't clip (probably due to lower amplification (35dB), but maybe the "soft clipping" too). However, the digital output doesn't sound quite as sharp as the anologue, and I'm wondering if the "Soft Clipping" it performs is responsible. So... can anyone recommend a high-enough quality a/d for vinyl? (I'll drive it from the NAD line-out).
