FWIW I get good results from an M-Audio Transit USB for doing needle-drops. I've had mine for a few years now, and see the price has dropped nicely to a bargain £50:

I couldn't detect any difference when using 96Khz. This is using a Goldring 1042/Graham Slee Era V Gold/Gyrodec SE with Tecnoarm. Maybe more revealing kit would benefit from higher sampling rates, but for me 48/24 with the Transit produces flacs indistinguishable from the vinyl (and better than CDs of the same disc - better bottom end, more warmth, silky highs, all the things us vinyl nutters like about the medium!). BTW the Transit system prefs pane (on a Mac) has a variable input level slider. I would imagine the Windows app has something similar.
