I don't understand why you think you need to convert to ALAC? I'm also a Mac user and keep my HD FLAC files as flac. If you're concerned about confirming TAGS on the FLAC files, there's a free Mac app called Tag at http://sbooth.org/Tag/. As far as cover art, most FLAC files will have a separate .jpg file of the cover art. Just keep it in the same folder as the FLAC files and rename it cover.jpg.
