I followed the advice in the "Beginners Guide to Classical" when I first started tagging classical music files last year and put the composer in the Artist tag, along with conductor, orchestra, and soloists. It has worked out okay, I mean it hasn't done me any harm, although it seems silly to pile up names in the "Artist" tag while redundantly putting the names also in Composer and Conductor tags. The rationale is that many programs give short shrift to tags like Composer and Conductor. For example, SBS lets you include Composer in the list of artists when you browse by artist, but only as an option you have to turn on, not by default. And if you do this, then popular song composers will show up in the artist list as well as classical, and I didn't want this. But mostly my worry was that I might run into software that didn't give me the option.
As amcluesent suggests, this worry might be misplaced. Systems will only get better over time at handling a wider variety of tags. I suggest you get the SBS software and experiment before committing to any definite tagging scheme.
