PNG (portable network graphics) was intended as a successor to the GIF format. It is lossless, which is to say that there is no big degree of file comperession (although file sizes on other than very small images will be smaller than GIF).
JPG images are lossy (compressed) and the degree of compression impacts the file size. Moderate compression produces images that are quite good quality with a small file size. If you want really good graphics representation, you may want to go with PNG, although support is not as widespread as it is for jpg, and there is not as good printer support. For use with the Squeezebox Controller, however, you will find that representation of the image is compromised much more by the quality of the display than by the file format. I'd stick with jpg in this context.
