For those who still have a hi-fi amplifier with a "phono" RIAA equalisation input, as most people will if they have a turntable, it is much better to use the "line out" or "record out" RCA sockets on their amplifier and connect them to the "line in" on their soundcard using an adapter cable.
If you are lacking either a phono pre-amp or a line-in socket (many laptops lack a line-in) you can also use this Behringer device which is more dedicated to vinyl to digital transfer: http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UFO202.aspx Both this and the iMic will need Windows 7 which has an input level control in its built-in driver for USB sound devices. Windows XP does not and most USB interface output gain will be far too high and drive the system to clipping when plugged into an XP computer. In this case you will need a phono pre-amp with variable gain control.
