Saying that SanDisk has supported FLAC and large SDHC cards for years is a little too sweeping. For example, my SanDisk Sansa did not support either FLAC or large SD cards out of the box -- I had to install Rockbox to get those features. On the other hand, SanDisk does support replacing their firmware with Rockbox, something that some other portable makers do not.
For me the large SD capacity has been great, but I never put FLAC on my Sansa. In the places where I play the Sansa (car, earbuds while running, etc) I am sure I can't tell the difference between FLAC and moderate bitrate MP3.
