Nope, it's not related to articles, as I can clearly see this problem with some of my artists, like Cesária Évora, Léo Ferré, Sébastien Tellier, Stéphane Grappelli or Émilie Simon.
On the other hand, I can find Stéphane Belmondo at letter B, as expected. The only difference between the first ones and the latter one, is that although Stéphane Belmondo is also featured as a side artist on half a dozen albums in my collection, he doesn't have a single track appearing on a compilation album. All the other ones do. I've just checked with Émilie Simon: if I tag her as "Emilie Simon" (without the acute on the E) on the compilation track where she appears, she's then correctly sorted at letter S. I also had another sorting problem it took me a long time to figure, with an album by Daby Touré & Skip McDonald. As I don't own anything else by these artists, I had set ALBUMARTIST to "Daby Touré & Skip McDonald" and ALBUMARTISTSORT to "Touré, Daby, McDonald, Skip", but it insisted appearing at letter "D". Looking closely at the tags of this downloaded album, I could see that the COMPOSER tag value wasn't the same in all tracks.
