But what would help more would be some information/knowledge about the
files themselves. You say they were downloaded, but from where?
Presumably you have some idea of what files are on your hard drive and
how they got there....

m4a could be AAC or Apple Lossless. I have purchased some albums
directly from artists' web sites that have both Apple Lossless and MP3.
If that is what you have then you definitely do _not_ want to delete the
m4a and keep the MP3. How do the file sizes compare?
