I don't recall, but if SB1 is only capable of 16 and 20 bit, it would
explain things.

The conversion framework doesn't appear to have any capability for
specifying changes in bit depth, only sampling rate. So forcing 24/96
FALC to be converted to Mp3 looks like it was a quick and dirty way to
enable it to play. That 24/48 FLAC isn't treated similarly is a bug,
probably just an oversite that didn't occur to whoever patched together
the workaround.

In many ways it's amazing that the Squeezebox system is capable of
playing so many different formats at so many bit depths and sampling
rates. But the conversion framework is a mess that often doesn't work.
