Hi all,
I am new to Rivendell and am trying to evaluate it for a local community radio
station I'm helping get started.

I have a generic older home-built PC (gigabyte MB, 1.5 GB RAM, 300 GB HD,
built-in sound card) I've used with various distros of Linux, and Windows.
Works fine.  The sound card is the one built into the motherboard (VIA 8237).
I know it's consumer-grade, but for evaluating Rivendell, it's fine.

I installed each of the following Rivendell Distros (clean install each time,
use entire disk):
- CentOS (Paravel)
- SUSE
- RRAbuntu

ALSA recognized the built-in sound card without manual effort and played sound
just fine with all of the distros.

BUT:
- Paravel's Rivendell did not automatically utilize the sound card, nor was it
available within Rivendell to "choose" as an option.
- The SUSE Rivendell did not automatically utilize the sound card, nor was it
available within Rivendell to "choose" as an option.

- RRAbuntu was the clear winner on this important aspect right off the bat.  It
utilized the built-in sound card and configured Rivendell to use it.  Sample
audio also made it easy to know I have a functioning Rivendell system.  THANK
YOU!

So, I'd like to make two suggestions to the developers that should attract WAY
more users to Rivendell:

1) Don't make users fight so hard to simply recognize and utilize a sound
card!  For goodness sake, this software is about playing audio!

2) The Operations Guide is excellent, but doesn't help a new user with the
*sequence* of how to set up their content, users, etc.  Please consider a short
guide / tutorial to help a new user configure their Rivendell for the first
time.

These 2 things would help grow the Rivendell user base quite nicely!

Thanks for your consideration,
