I haven't yet looked seriously into v2, but was seriously looking at putting v1.7 machines on Compact Flash cards with /var and /tmp in RAM tmpfs disks. The audio and MySQL are on a networked nfs/mysql server with RAIDed drives, so you really don't have much writing locally anyway. When we make the move to v2, I think I'll still seriously consider this strategy (and probably try to make the CF read-only).
