I have several Rivendell boxes set up to allow remote VNC access to the
running desktop using vino-server.

Yesterday the vino-server on one of them died, leaving the Rivendell box
running normally but refusing VNC connections from the studio. I didn't
want to reboot the thing because it would start the day's schedule at
midnight; also, there was a non-zero possibility it would decide to fsck
the drive with the audio files on it, which would mean about 25 minutes of
dead air.

I did a vast amount of Googling and found several sites that suggested
variations on the theme of:

ssh [user]@[server]
export DISPLAY=:0.0
xhost +
/usr/lib/vino/vino-server &

...but none of them work. I finally crossed my fingers and rebooted the
machine.

Has anyone run across a solution to this problem? Alternatively, is there
a more reliable way to allow VNC access to the desktop?

Rob
